The adverse impact on social and health conditions consequent to the economic recession which started in 2008 has been reported by the mass-media and also by some scholars. Great prominence, in particular, has been given to the many cases of suicide which occurred in those European countries that are experiencing this profound recession: Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece.
